Why should I use PDO instead of mysqli?

Asked 29 Oct 2026 · 1 views · About: Getting started with PDO

I have seen both in tutorials. Is there a real difference for a small project?
Same question here, thanks for asking.

PDO works with many databases and its named placeholders are easier to read. mysqli is fine but only supports MySQL.

Named placeholders really do help in long queries.

Both support prepared statements. PDO wins if you ever switch databases.
